What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder can affect anyone. It may be linked to a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, life events, and trauma. It often begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, though symptoms can appear at any age.
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes intense changes in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior. People with bipolar disorder experience emotional highs — known as mania or hypomania — and deep lows, or depressive episodes. These episodes can disrupt work, relationships, and everyday life. Bipolar disorder isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are several types, each with its own pattern of mood changes:
Bipolar I Disorder: Characterized by at least one manic episode, often followed by depressive episodes. Mania in this type can be severe and may require hospitalization.
Bipolar II Disorder: Involves cycles of depression and hypomania, a less intense form of mania. People with Bipolar II often struggle more with the depressive side.
Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia): A chronic form of bipolar disorder with frequent mood shifts that are milder and less extreme, but still disruptive to life.
Other Types: Bipolar symptoms can also be triggered by certain medical conditions or medications — these fall under “other specified” or “unspecified” bipolar disorders.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Everyone experiences ups and downs, but bipolar disorder involves episodes that are more extreme and disruptive. Symptoms can vary from person to person, but here’s what to look out for:
During a manic or hypomanic episode, you may
-
Feel unusually energized, excited, or irritable
-
Need very little sleep
-
Talk faster than usual
-
Feel invincible or overly confident
-
Make risky decisions (spending sprees, unsafe sex, etc.)
-
Become easily distracted or agitated
During adepressive episode, you may
- Feel deeply sad, hopeless, or empty
- Struggle with energy, motivation, or focus
- Sleep too much or too little
- Lose interest in things you once enjoyed
- Withdraw from family or friends
- Have thoughts of death or suicide
Some people also experience psychosis, such as hallucinations or delusional thinking, during extreme episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can bipolar disorder go away?
Bipolar disorder doesn’t usually go away, but with the right treatment and support, you can manage it and live a full, healthy life.
Is it just mood swings?
No. Bipolar episodes are more intense and longer-lasting than regular mood swings. They often disrupt daily functioning and relationships.
Can bipolar disorder be diagnosed with one visit?
Diagnosis usually takes a full evaluation and a review of your mood history. It’s not just based on one moment — it’s about patterns over time.
Is medication the only option?
Medication helps many people, but therapy, support, and healthy habits are also key. We focus on whole-person care.
